Possible Causes
Very dirty air filter, Blower motor failure or low speed, Low refrigerant charge, Closed registers or blocked returns, Oversized system with short run times
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off cooling at the thermostat to prevent compressor damage.
- Step 1 – Thaw the system: Set thermostat to FAN ONLY and let it run until all ice melts. Do not chip ice off the coil.
- Step 2 – Replace filter: Install a clean filter and ensure correct size and airflow rating.
- Step 3 – Check blower: Verify the blower runs strongly in cooling mode. If weak or intermittent, have the motor and capacitor checked.
- Step 4 – Open registers: Open all supply and return registers fully.
- Step 5 – Technician check: If icing recurs, a technician should check refrigerant charge and system design.
