Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the indoor unit and allow any ice on the coil to melt before working on it. Place towels under the unit to catch drips.
Steps to try:
- Clean or replace filters: Open the front panel of the indoor unit, remove the air filters, and wash them with mild soap and water. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.
- Inspect evaporator coil: With filters removed, look at the aluminum fins. If they are covered in dust or biofilm, use a coil-safe foaming cleaner designed for mini-split evaporators and follow the product instructions.
- Check indoor fan operation: Run the unit in FAN mode and verify that airflow is strong and consistent. Weak or intermittent airflow suggests a failing indoor fan motor or a dirty blower wheel.
- Set temperature and mode correctly: Avoid setting the temperature extremely low (e.g., 60°F/16°C) in very humid conditions; this can promote icing. Try 72–76°F (22–24°C) and use DRY mode if humidity is high.
When to call a pro: If E2 recurs after cleaning and airflow is good, low refrigerant or a metering device issue is likely and requires a licensed technician.
