Ruud air conditioner displays E8 and may shut down or limit operation during very hot weather.

Safety first: Disconnect power at the outdoor disconnect before cleaning or opening any panels. Refrigerant diagnostics must be performed by a licensed technician.

• Step 1 – Clean condenser coil: Remove debris and rinse the coil thoroughly from the inside out with a garden hose. Allow it to dry and then restore power.
• Step 2 – Check outdoor fan operation: Confirm that the Ruud condenser fan starts promptly and runs at full speed. A weak or non-running fan will cause high discharge temperatures.
• Step 3 – Inspect discharge sensor: Locate the discharge line thermistor near the compressor outlet. Ensure it is firmly attached and insulated as designed. Check for any damaged wires.
• Step 4 – Technician checks: If the E8 error recurs, a technician should check the refrigerant charge, superheat/subcooling, and the filter-drier for restriction. They may replace the discharge sensor if readings are abnormal.
