Possible Causes
Failed PSC or ECM blower motor, Blown indoor control board fuse, Failed blower capacitor (PSC motors), Seized blower bearings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the air handler/furnace at the breaker before opening any panels.
- Step 1 – Thermostat fan test: Set the thermostat to FAN ON. If the blower does not start, the issue is likely with the blower circuit.
- Step 2 – Check the control board fuse: Open the indoor unit and locate the low-voltage fuse on the Ruud control board. Replace it if blown with the same rating.
- Step 3 – Inspect the blower motor and capacitor: For PSC motors, locate the run capacitor and check for bulging or leaking. Replace it with the same µF and voltage rating if suspect.
- Step 4 – Spin the blower wheel: Try turning the blower wheel by hand. If it is stiff or seized, the motor bearings may have failed, and the motor should be replaced.
- Step 5 – Technician service: ECM motors require specialized diagnostics and programming; have a technician test and replace them if needed.
