Possible Causes

Manufacturing oils burning off the heater, grease buildup on the heater and interior surfaces, food debris stuck near the heating element, melted plastic from an accessory or liner contacting the heater.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you see smoke or flames, unplug immediately and do not open the drawer until the flames are out. For a persistent burning smell, discontinue use until the unit is inspected.

User actions:

  • Initial burn-in: For new units, run an empty cycle at 400°F (or the highest setting) for 10–15 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
  • Deep clean: Remove the basket and drawer. Clean all removable parts with warm, soapy water. Wipe interior surfaces and the heater guard with a damp cloth (unit unplugged and cool).
  • Inspect for plastic: Check that no plastic liners, packaging, or utensils are near the heater.

Advanced:

  • Access heater area: If the smell persists, remove the covers to inspect for melted plastic or heavy grease deposits on the heater and fan. Carefully scrape off deposits and clean with a degreaser safe for appliances.
