Possible Causes
Insufficient gas flow, Incorrect igniter location, Weak igniter not reaching proper temperature, Gas valve not opening
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas. Do not touch a recently energized igniter; it can be extremely hot.
- Step 1 – Observe ignition sequence: Watch through the sight glass. Confirm that the igniter glows bright orange and that gas should be flowing during this time.
- Step 2 – Check igniter alignment: Ensure the igniter is positioned in the gas stream as specified by Bradford White. Adjust if necessary.
- Step 3 – Test igniter resistance: With power OFF, measure the igniter resistance and compare it to manufacturer specifications. Replace if out of range.
- Step 4 – Gas valve and pressure (pro): A technician should verify gas valve operation and manifold pressure during the ignition trial.
- Step 5 – Replace faulty gas valve or control: If the igniter is good but gas does not flow, the gas valve or control board may need replacement.
Note: Hot surface igniters are fragile; handle them only by the ceramic base.
