Possible Causes
Blocked flow meter due to scale, Clogged inlet screen or tubing, Weak or seized ULKA-style pump, Faulty flow meter sensor or wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool. Never open the housing while the machine is connected to power.
Steps:
- Descale the machine: Fill the water tank with a Capresso-approved descaling solution or a mixture of white vinegar and water (per the user manual). Run a descaling cycle or several brew cycles without coffee to flush mineral buildup from the flow meter and tubing. Rinse with 2–3 full tanks of fresh water afterward.
- Check water tank outlet: Remove the tank and inspect the outlet valve and any mesh screen for debris. Rinse thoroughly and ensure the valve moves freely.
- Verify pump sound: During a brew attempt, listen for the pump. A loud humming with no water movement suggests a seized or air-locked pump. Try priming by filling the tank completely and starting a brew; sometimes air pockets clear after a few attempts.
- Inspect for kinks (if accessible): If you can safely remove the bottom cover (unplugged), check silicone hoses from the tank to the pump and from pump to heater for kinks or pinches.
- If E3 persists: The flow meter sensor or pump may be defective. Replacement of the flow meter assembly or pump is required and is typically a moderate to advanced repair.
