Possible Causes

Defective speed control switch, contaminated trigger or mode selector contacts, faulty control PCB, loose connector between switch and PCB.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Always remove the battery before any inspection.

  • Cycle the controls: With the battery removed, cycle the power mode selector (Low/High/Max) through all positions 10–15 times to wipe oxidation from contacts. Repeatedly pull and release the trigger.
  • Inspect for contamination: Inspect around the trigger and mode switch for dust, grease, or sticky residue. Wipe the exterior with a slightly damp cloth (with the battery removed) and dry thoroughly.
  • Check for physical damage: If the trigger feels loose, sticks, or does not return smoothly, the switch assembly may be worn or broken.
  • Test with another battery: Voltage sag from a weak battery can sometimes mimic speed fluctuation. Try a fully charged, known-good Makita battery.
  • If E5 remains: The internal speed control switch or PCB likely needs replacement. This requires opening the handle housing and should be performed by a Makita-authorized technician.
