Possible Causes
Tank heating element open or scaled, High-limit thermostat tripped or failed, Temperature sensor (NTC) faulty, Heater contactor or relay failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker and allow the machine to cool completely before opening panels.
- Verify temperature setting: Confirm the programmed wash temperature on the control matches your application and that the machine has adequate recovery time between loads.
- Inspect heating element: Remove the front or side access panel to view the tank heating element. Look for heavy scale buildup, burn marks, or broken terminals. If the element is heavily scaled, descaling the tank and element may restore performance; if physically damaged, replace the element.
- Check high-limit thermostat: Locate the high-limit (safety) thermostat on or near the tank. Press the manual reset button if present. If it trips repeatedly, suspect a stuck heater relay or poor water circulation.
- Test temperature sensor: If equipped with an NTC probe, inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion or loose pins. A faulty sensor can misreport temperature and trigger E2.
- Professional testing: Use a multimeter to check continuity of the heater and thermostat only if you are qualified. If E2 persists after resetting the high-limit and descaling, contact a Hobart technician to test the heater circuit and control board.
