Possible Causes

Failed heating element, Faulty high-limit thermostat, Loose or burned heater wiring, Defective control board heater relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker before accessing internal components. Water inside may be hot.

  • 1. Confirm symptom: Run a wash cycle and open the door mid-cycle (after 15–20 minutes). If the water is cold and E2 appears later, the heater circuit is suspect.
  • 2. Inspect wiring: Remove the lower toe-kick panel. Look for burned or loose wires going to the heating element terminals under the tub. Tighten or replace damaged connectors.
  • 3. Test heating element: With power off, disconnect the element leads and measure resistance with a multimeter. A typical Insignia dishwasher element is usually between 10–40 Ω. Infinite resistance indicates a failed element.
  • 4. Check high-limit thermostat: Locate the thermostat (often clipped to the tub or heater housing). Test for continuity at room temperature. An open thermostat must be replaced.
  • 5. Replace failed parts: If the element or thermostat is open, install an OEM-compatible Insignia heating element or high-limit thermostat. Reassemble and test a hot cycle.

If the heater and thermostat test good, the control board heater relay may be defective and should be diagnosed and replaced by a professional.
