Possible Causes

Blown thermal fuse on heater housing, Failed high-limit thermostat, Severely restricted exhaust vent causing overheat, Failed main control board not reading safety circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dryer or turn off the breaker. The heater housing can be very hot; allow it to cool.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Check airflow: Before opening the dryer, inspect the lint filter, the flexible vent hose, and the exterior vent hood. Clean any lint buildup and ensure the flap opens freely.
  • Access thermal devices: Remove the rear panel to access the heater housing. Locate the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat mounted on or near the heater assembly.
  • Test continuity: With the dryer unplugged, disconnect the wires from the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat. Use a multimeter in continuity mode. Each should show continuity (closed). If either is open, it has tripped or failed.
  • Replace blown components: If the thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat is open, replace it with the correct GE Profile OEM part. Do not bypass these safety devices.
  • Correct root cause: A blown fuse usually indicates overheating. Thoroughly clean internal lint, blower housing, and vent ducting. Verify the vent run is not excessively long or crushed.
  • Control board: If both devices test good and airflow is clear, the main control board may be misinterpreting the safety circuit and may need replacement.

Warning: Never operate the dryer with any safety thermostat or fuse bypassed. This is a fire hazard.
