Possible Causes
Broken proximity pilot conductor in cable, Faulty proximity switch in J1772 handle, Damaged resistor network on main PCB, Worn or contaminated latch mechanism in handle
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power before inspecting the handle closely.
- Check handle latch: Ensure the mechanical latch on the Bosch J1772 handle moves freely and fully engages when plugged into the vehicle. A stuck latch can prevent proper proximity signaling.
- Inspect cable flex point: Look at the area where the cable enters the handle and the charger housing. Repeated bending here can break the proximity conductor. If the cable feels soft or kinked, internal damage is possible.
- Test on another EV: Try plugging into a different vehicle. If none are detected, the issue is likely in the handle or charger, not the car.
- Do not attempt handle disassembly: The handle is a sealed component. If proximity components inside have failed, the entire cable/handle assembly must be replaced.
- Schedule service: Have a technician test the proximity circuit and replace the Bosch J1772 cable assembly if continuity is lost.
