Possible Causes

Broken proximity switch in J1772 handle, Damaged proximity wire in cable, Misaligned or stuck latch mechanism on connector, Faulty proximity input on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power to the EvoCharge unit before any disassembly. Do not attempt to charge with a damaged connector.

  • 1. Inspect the J1772 latch: Check that the latch on the EvoCharge connector moves freely and fully returns when released. Remove any dirt or debris around the latch. Do not lubricate with oil; use a dry silicone spray if needed.
  • 2. Test latch operation: Plug the connector into the vehicle and listen for the vehicle locking click (if equipped). Gently move the latch while watching the EvoCharge display; if E05 appears or disappears with latch movement, the proximity switch is intermittent.
  • 3. Check cable strain relief: At the point where the cable enters the handle, flex the cable gently. If E05 appears when the cable is bent, the proximity conductor inside may be broken.
  • 4. Replace handle/cable assembly: If the proximity switch or wiring is faulty, the recommended repair is to replace the entire EvoCharge J1772 handle and cable assembly with an OEM part. Field repair of the switch is generally not supported.
  • 5. Control board input check (advanced): With power OFF, verify the proximity signal connector on the control board is fully seated. If a known-good handle still causes E05, the board input may be defective.

Do not bypass the proximity circuit; it is a safety feature that prevents energizing when the connector is not properly latched.
