OpenEVSE Vehicle Ventilation Request Handling

Display shows 'VENT REQUIRED'; charging may not start with some vehicles (especially older models).

Possible Causes

Vehicle requesting ventilation mode not supported by OpenEVSE, incorrect pilot state interpretation, firmware not configured for vent-required handling.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Ventilation mode is primarily for older lead-acid EVs. Modern EVs typically do not use this feature.

  • Step 1 – Confirm vehicle type: Check whether your EV actually requires a ventilated charging area. Most modern lithium-ion EVs do not.
  • Step 2 – Firmware update: Ensure your OpenEVSE firmware is up to date. Newer firmware versions may handle vent-required states more gracefully.
  • Step 3 – Configuration: Using the LCD or Wi-Fi interface, check for any settings related to ventilation or legacy EV support and adjust according to OpenEVSE documentation.
  • Step 4 – Test with another EV: If the error only appears with one specific older vehicle, consult that vehicle's manual; you may need to provide additional ventilation or use a different EVSE that supports vent-required mode.
