Possible Causes
Open or shorted freezer thermistor, damaged thermistor wiring harness, corroded thermistor connector at the control board, or a failed electronic control board thermistor circuit.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the freezer before removing panels or handling wiring. Use an anti-static wrist strap when working near electronic boards.
- Step 1 – Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then restore it. If E1 returns, proceed with diagnostics.
- Step 2 – Access thermistor: Remove the interior evaporator cover or sensor cover where the freezer thermistor is mounted (often a small plastic bulb on the liner wall). Note its routing.
- Step 3 – Test thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor from its harness. Measure resistance with a multimeter at room temperature and compare it to the Gladiator/Whirlpool specification (commonly ~8–10 kΩ at 77°F/25°C). If the reading is infinite, near 0 Ω, or far out of range, replace the thermistor.
- Step 4 – Inspect wiring: Trace the harness from the thermistor to the electronic control board. Look for pinched, cut, or corroded wires, and repair or replace as needed.
- Step 5 – Replace control board if needed: If a known-good thermistor and wiring are present but E1 persists, replace the electronic control board with a Gladiator-compatible part.
