Possible Causes

Failed defrost thermistor on the evaporator, broken or shorted defrost sensor wiring, poor connection at the control board, or a defective electronic control board defrost circuit.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the freezer before removing the evaporator cover. Use gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal edges.

  • Step 1 – Access evaporator area: Remove baskets and shelves. Take off the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil and the defrost thermistor (usually clipped to the tubing).
  • Step 2 – Inspect sensor: Check that the thermistor is firmly attached to the evaporator and is not hanging loose or encased in heavy ice. If encased, manually defrost with a hair dryer on low, keeping it moving and away from plastic.
  • Step 3 – Test thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance at a known temperature (e.g., in ice water ~32°F/0°C). Compare it to the Gladiator specification. Replace if readings are incorrect.
  • Step 4 – Check wiring and board: Inspect the harness from the thermistor to the control board for damage. If the wiring is good and a new thermistor does not clear E3, replace the electronic control board.
