Possible Causes

Failed defrost NTC sensor on evaporator, Open-circuit defrost heater, Faulty defrost relay on main control board, Burned or loose wiring in defrost circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the appliance. Defrost heaters operate at mains voltage and can be hazardous.

Steps:

  • 1. Access evaporator area: Remove freezer drawers and inner rear panel to expose the evaporator coil and defrost components.
  • 2. Inspect for heavy ice: If the evaporator is a solid block of ice, allow it to fully defrost (doors open, towels in place) before testing components.
  • 3. Test defrost heater: Locate the defrost heater element (usually at the base or woven through the evaporator). Disconnect its connectors and measure resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed heater that must be replaced.
  • 4. Test defrost NTC sensor: Identify the defrost sensor clipped to the evaporator. Measure its resistance and compare to expected NTC values. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
  • 5. Check wiring and connectors: Follow the heater and sensor wiring back to the main control board. Look for burnt connectors, discoloration, or loose plugs. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  • 6. Control board check: If heater and sensor are good, the defrost relay or triac on the ELU may be defective. This typically requires replacing the main control board.

Tip: After repairs, reassemble panels carefully to avoid air leaks that can cause repeat icing.
