RCA freezer runs constantly and is too cold; ice crystals form on food, and ice cream becomes very hard.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing the control housing or thermostat.
Steps to correct overcooling:
- 1. Adjust the control: Turn the temperature control to a warmer setting and listen for the compressor to shut off within a few minutes. If it never shuts off, the control may be stuck.
- 2. Access the thermostat: On mechanical RCA freezers, remove the control knob and screws holding the thermostat housing. Carefully pull out the thermostat.
- 3. Test the thermostat: Disconnect wires and check continuity across the thermostat terminals while turning the shaft. It should open and close as you rotate. If it remains closed regardless of position, replace it.
- 4. Replace the thermostat: Install an RCA-compatible thermostat, routing the sensing bulb in the same location as the original and securing it with clips.
- 5. Reassemble and set the temperature: Reinstall the housing and knob. Set to a mid-range setting and monitor the temperature with a thermometer.
Note: On electronic models, follow the thermistor and control board testing steps described for E1/L1 if overcooling persists.
