Possible Causes

Spoiled food residue in crevices, Mold growth in the drain pan or insulation, Blocked or dirty drain pan, Long-term power outage with food spoilage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Wear gloves and ensure good ventilation when cleaning.

  • Deep clean interior: Remove all shelves and drawers. Clean all surfaces with a mixture of baking soda and warm water. Pay attention to door gaskets and seams.
  • Clean drain pan: Unplug the unit, remove the rear panel, and slide out the drain pan. Clean thoroughly with hot soapy water and disinfectant.
  • Air out the unit: Leave doors open for 24 hours with the unit unplugged to allow odors to dissipate.
  • Odor absorbers: Place activated charcoal or baking soda boxes inside the freezer after cleaning.
  • Persistent odor: If the smell remains, contamination may be in the insulation, which is not easily serviceable. Replacement of the cabinet may be the only permanent solution.
