Freezer displays E5 and may not cool; compressor may not start or may shut down quickly.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect mains power. Work carefully around the compressor and high-voltage components.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor and electrical box.
- Visual inspection: Look for burnt marks on the start relay, melted plastic, or a tripped overload protector.
- Check compressor terminals: Ensure all spade connectors are tight and not oxidized. Do not pull on wires; grip the connector body.
- Test start relay/PTC: Remove the relay from the compressor. Shake it gently; if it rattles excessively or smells burnt, it is likely faulty. Measure resistance according to the part specification if available.
- Test compressor windings: With the relay removed and power disconnected, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see three finite resistances; any open circuit or direct short to ground indicates a bad compressor.
- Replace faulty start components: Install a new Teka-compatible start relay/PTC and overload protector if they test bad. Ensure correct orientation on the compressor pins.
- If compressor is seized or windings are faulty: The compressor must be replaced, which requires refrigerant handling equipment and should be done by a certified refrigeration technician.
Test: Refit the cover, restore power, and listen for the compressor starting smoothly. Monitor cabinet temperature and confirm that E5 does not return.
