Possible Causes

Defective evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged thermistor harness, Faulty main control PCB sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Disconnect power before removing any covers. Sharp metal edges around the evaporator can cause injury; wear cut-resistant gloves.

Steps:

  • 1. Access the evaporator: Empty the freezer section as needed. Remove the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator coil and fan assembly.
  • 2. Locate the evaporator thermistor: It is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or embedded in a small plastic holder attached to the coil.
  • 3. Visual inspection: Ensure the thermistor is firmly attached to the coil and not hanging loose. Check for ice buildup that may have pulled the sensor away or damaged the wires.
  • 4. Test the sensor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor connector. Measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to expected NTC values (for many Toshiba sensors, around 5–10 kΩ at 25°C; resistance should change smoothly if warmed slightly in your hand). Replace if open, shorted, or erratic.
  • 5. Check wiring to PCB: Follow the harness from the evaporator area to the control box. Look for pinched or corroded wires and reseat the connector on the main PCB.
  • 6. Replace components: Install a new Toshiba-compatible evaporator thermistor if defective. If the sensor and harness are good but E2 persists, the main control PCB may need replacement.

Note: After replacement, clear the error by unplugging the freezer for several minutes, then restore power and monitor operation.
