Possible Causes
Intermittent gas valve operation; weak hot surface ignitor on Ducane burner assembly; flame sensor not reliably sensing flame; low gas pressure.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas before touching gas train components.
- Step 1 – Observe ignition sequence: Restore power and gas, call for heat, and watch through the sight glass. Note whether the ignitor glows, gas flows, and a flame appears with each attempt.
- Step 2 – Service flame sensor and ignitor: Clean the flame sensor as described in earlier steps. Inspect the ignitor for cracks or discoloration. If the ignitor glows very dimly or not at all, it should be replaced.
- Step 3 – Check gas supply: Confirm the manual gas shutoff is fully open and other gas appliances operate normally. If multiple appliances show issues, contact the gas utility.
- Step 4 – Reset lockout: Turn power off for 30 seconds, then back on. Some Ducane boards require cycling the thermostat to clear the lockout.
- Step 5 – Professional diagnosis: If the lockout returns, a technician should measure flame signal microamps, ignitor current, and gas valve voltage to determine if the gas valve or control board is failing.
