Possible Causes
Tripped circuit breaker, tripped GFCI outlet, faulty wall switch, loose wire connection in disposal junction box.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Before touching any wiring, turn OFF the breaker supplying power to the disposal.
- Check breaker: Locate the kitchen/disposal breaker in your electrical panel. If it is in the middle or OFF position, switch it fully OFF, then back ON.
- Check GFCI: If the disposal plugs into a GFCI outlet (often located under the sink or on the backsplash), press RESET and test with a lamp.
- Test wall switch: Use a non-contact voltage tester at the switch. If no power is present on either terminal with the breaker ON, the feed is open; if power is present on the line but not the load when ON, replace the switch.
- Inspect junction box: With the breaker OFF, remove the small cover where the cord or house wires enter the American Standard disposal. Tighten any loose wire nuts and ensure the ground wire is secure.
- Try reset button: Turn power back on and press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
