Clogged Drain Line / P-Trap
Garbage disposal backs up into the sink; water drains very slowly or not at all when the disposal is off.

Possible Causes
Food debris packed in the discharge elbow, grease and sludge buildup in the P-trap, a clog in the wall drain beyond the trap, inadequate flushing with water during use.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power to the disposal. Do not use chemical drain cleaners.
- Step 1 – Remove standing water: Use a cup or small container to bail water from the sink into a bucket.
- Step 2 – Disassemble drain: Place a bucket under the P-trap. Loosen the slip nuts on the discharge elbow and P-trap, then remove them.
- Step 3 – Clear blockage: Use a bottle brush or similar tool to remove food and grease buildup from the elbow, trap, and horizontal drain pipe. Rinse parts in a separate sink or outdoors.
- Step 4 – Inspect wall drain: If the pipes are clear but the wall drain is blocked, use a small drain snake to clear the line. If you are not comfortable, contact a plumber.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the P-trap and elbow, ensuring gaskets are seated. Tighten slip nuts and run water to confirm proper drainage.
