Possible Causes
Shorted switch contacts, Miswired line and load, Crossed neutrals in junction box, Defective smart switch or timer controlling disposal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Immediately turn OFF the breaker feeding the disposal. Do not use the sink until the issue is resolved.
- Test the switch: With power OFF, remove the switch cover and inspect for signs of burning or melted plastic. Replace the switch if damaged.
- Verify wiring: Confirm that the line (incoming hot) and load (to disposal) are correctly connected to the switch terminals. Correct any miswiring.
- Remove smart controls: If a smart switch, timer, or remote module is used, temporarily bypass it with a standard switch to see if the problem disappears.
- Test after repair: Restore power and verify that the disposal only runs when the switch is ON and stops immediately when turned OFF.
