Possible Causes
Shorted or seized compressor, Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty run capacitor (if used), Wiring short between the main PCB and compressor terminals, Defective main control PCB triac/relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. High voltage is present at the compressor terminals when the unit is running.
Steps:
- Basic reset: Allow the unit to cool for 30–60 minutes while unplugged, then try again. If E5 returns immediately, continue.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear or side panels to expose the compressor and its wiring cover.
- Inspect wiring: Look for burnt connectors, melted insulation, or loose spade terminals at the compressor and the main PCB.
- Check start device: Many Sharp dehumidifiers use a PTC start relay or a combined start device on the compressor. Remove it and inspect for burn marks or rattling pieces inside.
- Test compressor windings: With a multimeter, measure the resistance between the three compressor pins (C, S, R). None of them should be open or shorted to the compressor shell. If any winding is open or shorted to ground, the compressor is faulty.
- Replace start device/capacitor: If the compressor windings test OK, replace the compressor start relay/PTC and any external run capacitor with Sharp-specified parts.
- Control board: If the compressor and start components are good but E5 persists, the main control PCB relay or current-sensing circuit may be faulty and require replacement.
Note: Replacing a failed compressor or opening the sealed system must be performed by a licensed refrigeration technician.
