Possible Causes
Food or grease buildup on elements, foil or plastic left in the oven, dripping onto a hidden bake element, failing insulation or wiring overheating.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames, turn off the oven and keep the door closed. If smoke is heavy, ventilate the area and consider calling emergency services.
- Step 1 – Inspect the interior: Once cool, inspect the oven cavity, racks, and elements for spilled food, grease, or foreign objects (foil, plastic, packaging).
- Step 2 – Clean thoroughly: Use a non-caustic oven cleaner or the oven's self-clean function (if safe to do so) to remove heavy buildup. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Step 3 – Check drip shields: On models with hidden bake elements, remove the bottom panel and clean any grease or debris on the shield.
- Step 4 – Inspect wiring (if the smell persists): With power off and the rear panel removed, look for discolored or melted wiring or insulation. If found, discontinue use and call a technician.
Note: A slight odor is normal on first use or after self-clean, but persistent burning smells require investigation.
