Possible Causes
Failed combustion fan motor, Loose fan wiring at controller, Obstructed fan blades, Fan relay failure on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the grill and ensure it is cool before accessing internal fans.
- Identify fan type: Memphis pellet grills typically use a combustion fan to supply air to the fire pot and a convection fan to circulate heat. ER-9 may indicate one of these is not operating.
- Listen for fan operation: During startup (with panels installed), you should hear the combustion fan running. If it is silent, proceed to inspection.
- Access fan: Remove the side or rear service panel to expose the fan assembly. Check that the fan blades are free of grease buildup and debris. Clean with a brush and degreaser if necessary.
- Spin test: Gently spin the fan by hand. It should rotate freely without grinding. If stiff or seized, the motor is failing and should be replaced.
- Check wiring: Verify that the fan’s power leads are firmly connected to the controller. Look for burned connectors or melted insulation. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- Test with power: With the fan exposed and all safety precautions observed, plug in the grill and start it. Confirm that the fan receives power and attempts to spin. If the fan does not run but has proper voltage, replace the fan motor. If no voltage is present, the control board fan relay may be defective.
- Reassemble and test: After replacing or repairing the fan, reassemble panels and run a startup. Monitor for stable temperature and confirm ER-9 is cleared.
