Possible Causes

Grease fire, Excessive pellet feed due to stuck auger relay, Controller miscalibration, RTD probe reading too high

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Treat this as a potential grease fire. Turn the grill OFF, unplug it, and keep the lid closed until flames are out. Never use water on a grease fire.

  • 1. After cool-down, deep clean:
    • Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle.
    • Scrape and remove all heavy grease from the drip tray and barrel.
    • Vacuum ash from the firepot and bottom of the grill.
  • 2. Inspect auger feed:
    • Check that pellets are not overflowing the firepot.
    • If the firepot is heaped with pellets, the auger may be overfeeding due to a stuck relay or controller fault.
  • 3. Check RTD and controller:
    • Clean the RTD probe of soot and grease.
    • If HEr occurs at normal cooking temps, test/replace the RTD.
    • If a new RTD does not fix it, replace the controller.
  • 4. Prevent recurrence:
    • Empty the grease bucket regularly.
    • Line the drip tray with foil and clean it frequently to prevent grease buildup.
