Possible Causes
Weak pilot flame due to a dirty pilot orifice, Faulty thermocouple on the Pahlen pilot assembly, Loose thermocouple connection at the gas valve, Drafts blowing out the pilot.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas before working on the pilot assembly. Follow all gas safety precautions.
Step-by-step checks:
- Clean pilot orifice: Remove the pilot tube and gently clean the orifice with compressed air. Do not enlarge the opening.
- Inspect thermocouple: Ensure the thermocouple tip is properly positioned in the pilot flame. Tighten the thermocouple nut at the gas valve snugly but not excessively.
- Check flame quality: Relight the pilot and observe the flame. It should envelop the thermocouple tip. If it is small or yellow, further cleaning or gas pressure adjustment may be needed.
- Replace thermocouple: If the pilot lights but goes out when the button is released, replace the thermocouple with a compatible Pahlen part.
When to stop: If pilot issues persist, have a gas technician check gas pressure and valve operation.
