Possible Causes

Dirty flame sensor, Poor burner flame due to clogged orifices, Low gas pressure, Faulty ignition control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Disconnect electrical power and shut off gas before servicing. Allow the heater to cool.

  • Inspect burner flame: With the front panel removed and after restoring power and gas, observe the flame through the sight glass. Flames should be blue and stable, not yellow and lifting. If flames are weak or uneven, shut off power and gas and proceed to cleaning.
  • Clean burners and orifices: Remove the burner tray assembly following the Zodiac service manual. Use compressed air or a soft brush to clear debris, spider webs, and rust from burners and orifices. Do not enlarge orifices.
  • Clean flame sensor: Gently polish the flame sensor rod with fine abrasive pad to remove oxidation. Ensure it is properly positioned in the burner flame.
  • Check gas pressure (pro level): A manometer is required. If you are not trained, have a technician verify inlet and manifold gas pressure against Zodiac specifications.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall burner tray, confirm all panels and safety switches are in place, restore power and gas, and call for heat. If E02 persists, the ignition control board or gas valve may be faulty and should be tested by a professional.
