Possible Causes
Leaking pump lid o-ring, Loose suction union, Cracked suction plumbing, Drain plug o-ring missing or damaged
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power before opening the pump lid or adjusting valves.
- Fill pump with water: Remove the Sta-Rite pump lid and fill the strainer housing completely with water. Lubricate the lid o-ring with silicone lube and reinstall the lid tightly.
- Inspect lid o-ring: Check for cracks, flattening, or dirt on the o-ring. Clean or replace it if needed.
- Check drain plugs: Verify that the winterizing drain plugs on the pump housing are installed with intact o-rings and are snug.
- Tighten suction unions: Hand-tighten unions on the suction side. Do not overtighten to the point of cracking.
- Look for visible leaks: With the pump running, observe the suction plumbing for air being drawn in (bubbles in the lid, water drips when off). Repair cracked fittings or re-seal threaded joints with appropriate thread sealant.
- Verify water level and valves: Ensure the pool water level is high enough and that suction valves (skimmer/main drain) are open.
