Possible Causes

Moisture intrusion into motor windings, Damaged insulation on motor leads contacting frame, Water inside terminal box or drive enclosure, Failing motor winding with leakage to ground

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and verify the circuit is de-energized. Do not operate a pump suspected of ground fault; risk of electric shock.

  • Inspect for moisture: Remove the motor terminal cover and controller cover. Look for condensation, water tracks, or corrosion on terminals and the control board. Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth and low-heat air (no open flame).
  • Check insulation resistance: With all power disconnected and motor leads isolated, use a megohmmeter (500V or 1000V) between each motor lead and ground. Values below manufacturer recommendations (often < 1 MΩ) indicate insulation breakdown.
  • Inspect cable and conduit: Look for cracked insulation, nicked wires, or water-filled conduit between the panel and pump.
  • Correct moisture source: Seal conduit entries, replace gaskets on the terminal box, and ensure the pump is not being sprayed by irrigation or rain.
  • Replace motor if leakage persists: If insulation resistance remains low after drying, replace the U.S. Motors motor. If the motor tests good but E06 persists, the drive's ground fault detection circuit may be defective.
