Possible Causes
Pump lid o-ring damaged or dry, Low pool water level drawing air through skimmer, Loose unions on suction plumbing, Cracked suction fitting at pump housing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off the pump before opening the lid or plumbing. Do not run the pump dry for more than a minute.
- Check water level: Ensure the pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening so the skimmer does not suck air.
- Inspect lid o-ring: Remove the Waterway pump lid, clean the o-ring and sealing surface, and apply a thin coat of silicone-based lubricant. Replace the o-ring if cracked or flattened.
- Check suction unions: Tighten the union nuts on the suction side of the pump. Look for hairline cracks in the fittings or pump housing.
- Prime the pump: Fill the pump strainer pot completely with water, reinstall the lid, open all valves, and start the pump. It may take 1–3 minutes to fully prime.
- Observe for air leaks: While running, look for air bubbles under the lid or in the return jets. Persistent air indicates a suction leak that may require replacing fittings or the pump housing.
