Possible Causes
Spilled food or grease on oven bottom, dirty broil element or burner, foil blocking airflow, high-temperature residue burning off.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If flames are present, turn off the oven and keep the door closed to smother the fire. If fire persists, call emergency services.
- Inspect interior: Once cool, remove racks and inspect the oven bottom, walls, and broil element/burner for heavy grease or food buildup.
- Clean thoroughly: Use a non-abrasive oven cleaner or a baking soda paste to clean spills. Avoid spraying directly on elements or igniters.
- Remove foil: Do not line the oven bottom or racks with foil, as this can trap heat and cause burning odors.
- Burn-off cycle: After cleaning, run the oven at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off any remaining residues.
Persistent burning smells after cleaning may indicate insulation or wiring damage and should be inspected by a technician.
