Possible Causes
Spilled food or grease on the oven bottom, new oven protective oils burning off, foil or liners touching elements, faulty wiring insulation burning.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames or heavy smoke, turn off the oven and keep the door closed. Use a fire extinguisher rated for grease/electrical fires if needed; never use water on grease fires.
- Initial burn-in (new oven):
- For new Kenmore ranges, run an empty bake cycle at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
- Clean spills:
- Once cool, remove racks and clean heavy grease or food spills from the oven bottom and walls with a non-abrasive cleaner.
- Check for foil or liners:
- Remove any foil or liners that may be touching elements or blocking airflow.
- Inspect wiring (if smell is electrical):
- Turn off power and remove the rear panel.
- Look for melted insulation or burnt connectors near elements and the control.
- Repair or replace damaged wiring and components.
