Viking oven shows F17 and gas oven burner does not ignite (for gas ranges).

Safety first: Turn off electrical power and shut off the gas supply before removing burner covers or accessing gas components. If you smell strong gas, ventilate the area and contact your gas supplier immediately.

Steps to check and correct:

• Verify gas supply: Ensure the gas shutoff valve behind the range is fully open and that other gas appliances in the home are working.
• Observe ignition: With panels in place and power restored, start a bake cycle and watch through the oven window. The igniter should glow bright orange within 30–60 seconds and the burner should light. If the igniter glows but the burner does not light, the igniter may be too weak.
• Test igniter: Turn power off, remove the oven bottom panel and flame spreader to access the igniter. Inspect for cracks. Test resistance with a multimeter; an open igniter must be replaced.
• Check wiring and valve: Inspect the harness from the igniter to the safety valve and control. If the igniter is good but no gas flows, the oven safety valve may be defective.
• Replace igniter: Most F17 issues are resolved by replacing the hot surface igniter with the correct Viking part.

When to call a technician: Any work involving gas valves or if ignition still fails after igniter replacement should be handled by a qualified gas appliance technician.
