Possible Causes
Open defrost heater, Failed defrost thermostat/bi-metal, Defective defrost thermistor, Main control board not initiating defrost
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the refrigerator and be cautious of sharp metal edges.
Steps:
- Manual defrost: Remove freezer contents and rear panel. Melt frost with a hair dryer on low, keeping it moving to avoid damage.
- Test heater: With wiring disconnected, measure resistance of the defrost heater. Replace if open.
- Check defrost thermostat: When cold, it should show continuity. Replace if open when below freezing.
- Inspect thermistor: Test the evaporator thermistor resistance and compare to spec. Replace if out of range.
- If all components test good, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and should be replaced.
