Ecobee Thermostat Overshoot / Differential or Sensor Placement Issue

The room temperature overshoots the setpoint by several degrees before the system shuts off.

Possible Causes

Thermostat installed near supply vent or heat source, Incorrect heat/cool differential settings, Slow-responding radiant system with default settings, Faulty or miscalibrated internal sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: No electrical hazards. Adjustments are in software and placement.

  • Step 1 – Check thermostat location: Ensure the Ecobee is not directly above a supply vent, radiator, or in direct sunlight. If it is, consider relocating it.
  • Step 2 – Adjust thresholds: In Installation Settings > Thresholds, fine-tune the heat and cool differentials and temperature correction to reduce overshoot.
  • Step 3 – Use room averaging: If you have SmartSensors, enable room averaging so the thermostat uses multiple readings instead of just the base unit.
  • Step 4 – Verify sensor accuracy: Compare Ecobee’s reading to a reliable thermometer. If consistently off, apply a temperature correction in the settings or replace the thermostat if the error is extreme.
