Possible Causes

Lid or door lock not engaging, unbalanced load detection, failed drive motor, worn drive hub or basket splines, failed gearcase

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the washer before accessing internal components.

  • Check lid/door lock: Ensure the lock light comes on during spin. If not, troubleshoot and replace the lock assembly.
  • Redistribute load: Open the lid/door and redistribute clothes evenly. Remove heavy items if overloaded.
  • Run drain & spin: Try a drain & spin cycle with a small load or empty tub. If it still will not spin, continue.
  • Inspect drive system:
    • On top-loaders, remove the agitator and inspect the drive hub for stripped splines; replace if worn.
    • Check the drive belt (if equipped) and replace if broken or loose.
  • Evaluate gearcase: If the motor runs but the basket does not spin and the hub/belt are good, the gearcase may be failed and require replacement.
