Washer stops mid-cycle with E8, drum position or speed error
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the washer before accessing the motor or control board.
- Check for mechanical drag: Rotate the drum by hand with the machine off. If it is stiff or scraping, inspect for foreign objects between drum and tub (e.g., bra wire) before suspecting electronics.
- Inspect motor and tacho (advanced): Remove the rear panel and belt. Remove the motor. On the rear of the motor, locate the tachometer coil (small round component). Ensure it is firmly attached and not cracked.
- Check wiring: Inspect the motor connector and wiring harness from the motor to the control board for damage or loose connections.
- Test tacho coil: With a multimeter, measure resistance across the tachometer terminals. A very high or infinite reading indicates a failed coil.
Motor speed control faults can be complex; if E8 persists after basic checks, have a Defy technician test and, if necessary, replace the motor or control module.
