Possible Causes
Failed NTC temperature sensor, Open or shorted heating element (if equipped), Loose wiring to heater or sensor, Faulty main control board heater relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the washer before accessing internal components. Heating circuits can store energy.
- Check cycle selection: Confirm you are using a cycle that actually uses hot water or heating. Some Insignia models rely solely on incoming hot water without an internal heater.
- Access heater area: On models with an internal heater, remove the rear panel to locate the heater element mounted in the bottom of the tub with two terminals and a center ground.
- Inspect wiring: Ensure all connectors to the heater and temperature sensor (NTC) are secure and free of corrosion.
- Test heater (advanced): With a multimeter, measure resistance across the heater terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed element that must be replaced.
- Test NTC sensor: Measure resistance of the NTC at room temperature and compare to Insignia specifications (typically 5–20 kΩ). A reading of 0 Ω or infinite resistance indicates failure.
- Replace faulty parts: Replace the Insignia heater element or NTC sensor as needed, ensuring the tub gasket is properly seated to prevent leaks.
- Control board check: If heater and sensor are good, the main control board heater relay may be defective and should be evaluated by a technician.
