Possible Causes
Clogged drain pump filter, partially blocked drain hose, failing drain pump, obstruction in tub-to-pump hose
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the washer. Have towels and a shallow pan ready for water drainage.
Steps:
- Clean pump filter: Remove the lower front access panel. Place a pan under the pump clean-out. Slowly open the filter cap and drain water. Remove lint, coins, and debris from the filter and pump housing.
- Inspect hoses: Check the tub-to-pump hose and drain hose for clogs or kinks. Remove any obstructions and ensure hoses are not crushed behind the machine.
- Check pump operation: With the filter removed, spin the impeller. If it is jammed or broken, replace the drain pump assembly.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the filter and panel, plug in, and run a drain/spin cycle. Observe the drain hose for strong water flow.
- Replace pump if needed: If the pump hums but does not move water, or if F21 returns despite clear hoses, replace the Kenmore drain pump.
Tip: Excessive suds from non-HE detergent can also cause long drain; use only HE detergent and correct amounts.
