Possible Causes
Worn agitator dogs (agitator cams), stripped agitator spline, broken drive coupler (direct-drive models), failed transmission
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the washer and shut off water supply before tipping or moving the unit.
Steps:
- Check agitator dogs: Remove the fabric softener cap and inner cover from the agitator. Remove the center bolt and pull the upper agitator off. Inspect the plastic agitator dogs; replace if worn smooth or broken.
- Inspect agitator spline: Check the inside of the agitator and the transmission shaft spline for wear. Replace the agitator if stripped.
- Check drive coupler (direct-drive): Tilt the washer back and remove the pump and motor from the transmission. Inspect the rubber/plastic drive coupler between motor and transmission. Replace if cracked or broken.
- Transmission check: If coupler and agitator are good but no agitation, the transmission may be faulty and require replacement.
