Possible Causes
No thermal expansion tank installed, failed or waterlogged expansion tank, high incoming water pressure, check valve or PRV creating a closed system.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Do not cap the T&P discharge. It is a safety relief device.
Steps:
- Check for an expansion tank: Look on the cold inlet line for a small tank. If present, tap it; if it sounds full of water, it may be waterlogged.
- Test pressure: Use a pressure gauge to monitor system pressure while the heater runs. If pressure spikes significantly, install or replace the expansion tank and ensure it is properly pre-charged.
- Check PRV: If you have a pressure-reducing valve (PRV), verify it is functioning correctly and not causing excessive pressure.
Persistent expansion issues should be evaluated by a plumber to protect both the heater and the plumbing system.
