Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Water and electrical safety: Immediately turn OFF power at the breaker and close the cold water supply valve. Do not operate a leaking unit.
Leak isolation steps:
- Remove the front cover and use a flashlight to locate the exact source of the leak (heat exchanger, inlet/outlet fittings, flow sensor, element gaskets).
- Tighten any compression or threaded fittings slightly, being careful not to overtighten and damage threads.
- Replace any visibly cracked or flattened O-rings on the flow sensor, heating elements, or other removable components.
- If the copper heat exchanger itself is leaking (pinhole or crack), the entire heat exchanger assembly must be replaced; this is typically a technician-level repair.
- After repairs, slowly reopen the water supply while watching for leaks before restoring power.
Do not energize the heater until all leaks are fully resolved and the interior is dry.
