Insulation Degradation / Overheating
GSW water heater outer jacket is very hot to the touch, or insulation seems inadequate.

Possible Causes
Internal insulation damage from a leak, excessive water temperature, missing access panel insulation, very old non-insulated model.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power or gas if overheating is suspected. Avoid contact with hot surfaces.
- Check temperature setting: Reduce thermostat setting to recommended range.
- Inspect access panels: Ensure all insulation pieces are in place behind the upper and lower covers.
- Look for leaks: Remove panels and check for moisture that could compress insulation. Address any leaks found.
- Consider replacement or insulating blanket: For older GSW models with minimal insulation, consider replacing with a newer high-efficiency model or adding an approved insulating jacket (not covering controls or T&P valve).
