Possible Causes

Heavy mineral sediment on the bottom of the tank, scaled heating elements, high hardness water.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power or gas and allow water to cool.

Descaling procedure:

  • Connect a hose to the drain valve and drain several gallons, then close the valve.
  • Open the cold supply briefly to stir sediment, then drain again. Repeat until water runs clear.
  • For electric models, remove the lower element and use a wet/dry vacuum with a small tube to remove sediment from the bottom.
  • Consider installing a water softener or performing annual flushes to prevent recurrence.
