Possible Causes

Heavy mineral sediment on the bottom of the tank, scaled heating elements, high hardness water.

Safety first: Turn OFF power or gas and allow water to cool.

Descaling procedure:

Connect a hose to the drain valve and drain several gallons, then close the valve.
Open the cold supply briefly to stir sediment, then drain again. Repeat until water runs clear.
For electric models, remove the lower element and use a wet/dry vacuum with a small tube to remove sediment from the bottom.
Consider installing a water softener or performing annual flushes to prevent recurrence.
