Possible Causes

Disconnected salt sensor harness, failed salt level sensor, corroded sensor contacts, incorrect sensor installation height

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the softener before working near wiring or the control head.

  • Step 1 – Locate salt sensor: Many GE models use an optional salt level sensor in the brine tank. Remove the brine tank lid and locate the sensor probe or float assembly.
  • Step 2 – Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor cable to the control head. Ensure the connector is fully seated and not corroded. Clean contacts with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
  • Step 3 – Check sensor position: Verify the sensor is mounted at the correct height per the installation instructions. If it is too high or too low, the control may misread the salt level.
  • Step 4 – Test sensor: If accessible, disconnect the sensor and check resistance or continuity according to the service manual. A completely open or shorted sensor indicates failure.
  • Step 5 – Replace sensor: If wiring is intact and the error persists, replace the GE salt level sensor / SmartSensor assembly.
  • Note: The softener can still operate without the sensor; you may disable the feature in programming if allowed by your model.
