Step-by-step checks:

  • Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then restore power to see if the E1 code clears. If it returns, continue.
  • Access the temperature sensor: Remove the interior shelves and the rear or side liner cover (depending on model) to locate the cabinet/evaporator thermistor clipped to the evaporator or liner wall.
  • Inspect connections: Check the thermistor plug where it connects to the main control board (usually behind the rear service panel). Look for loose, corroded, or damaged pins. Reseat the connector firmly.
  • Check sensor resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature (~77°F / 25°C), most JennAir NTC thermistors read roughly 5k–10k ohms. If it reads open (OL) or 0 ohms, the sensor is defective.
  • Inspect wiring harness: Follow the harness from the sensor to the control board. Look for pinched, cut, or chewed wires and repair with proper crimp connectors and heat-shrink tubing.
  • Replace the sensor: If resistance is out of spec, install a new OEM JennAir temperature sensor/thermistor, route the wires as originally, and secure the sensor clip to the evaporator or liner.
  • Control board check: If a known-good sensor still triggers E1, the main control board temperature input may be faulty and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
